Chapter 8: Examining Your Home Broadband Hookup

Intersections cause tension. This is true when driving or on TV shows. When driving, intersections allow other vehicles to come at you from all directions. On TV dramas, whenever the good guys and bad guys run into each other, something happens (or at least there are threats of future happenings).

The same goes for your broadband connection. Outside your walls, the service provider must take care of all the details. Inside your walls, you are responsible for your computer or the computers connected to each other and the broadband connection.

Where your network meets the broadband service provider network is a true intersection and therefore a potential conflict. You are responsible for all broadband access problems starting at any of the following intersections:

* Where the broadband service provider wire hits your house

* Where the broadband connection plug is inside your house

* At the plug where you connect your computer or network to the broadband modem

* At the router plug where you connect your computer or network to the broadband access router

Where you take responsibility, and where your broadband service provider stops being responsible, depends on your service and the equipment involved. The focus here is the link between your service provider broadband cable or modem and your router or computer.
